MAVERICKS 16S MONTANA SPRAGUE , BAILI DIXON, AND JOSIE SAVOLDI
WITH COACH STEVE SAVOLDI AND THE MAYOR OF CARMEL, JASON BURNETT.
OCTOBER 2013
Below is the commendation read by the Mayor Burnett when he invited the 16U Mavericks to City Hall to be honored before the City Council. His remarks were followed by a short address by Mavericks Board Member and Coach, Steve Savoldi who thanked the city of Carmel for recognizing the girls' effort and success, going on to tell the story of CCGS and inviting the public to come out and enjoy supporting girls' softball.
"This past weekend, over 50 softball teams from northern California took part in the ASA SOFTBALL Fall Kick Off Tournament, held in Salinas, California. One such team was the Mavericks, made up of students mostly from Carmel High School, but also two players from Seaside High and one from York School. The Mavericks played in the oldest division, consisting of high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The team competed in six games over the two days, and late Sunday evening they beat the San Jose TABU in the Championship Game by a score of 10-4.
The team went on to play in their second tournament this past weekend. A lot of people might have thought it was a fluke two weeks ago that a new team, made up mostly of girls young enough to have signed up for the younger age division, was able to win the championship in the 16-and-under division. But then a few days ago, they once again battled all weekend to earn a spot in the Championship Game, this time against the heavily favored Salinas Wildcats. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, which they held throughout the game. But the Mavericks chipped away until they were able to tie the game 3-3 just before time ran out, sending the game into extra innings. Finally, two innings later, the Mavericks pulled off the improbable come-from-behind upset with a walkoff single to win the Tournament Championship by a score of 4-3!
The Mavericks' next tournament is in a week and a half, when they travel to Saratoga to honor an 11-year-old softball player, Alexis Briski, who died of bone cancer a few years ago. The tournament is the only one the team will travel to this fall, because it is a fundraiser for the Alexis Briski Memorial Scholarship Fund."
